Rubber Base: What It Is and How to Use It

10/10/2026

Komilfo Rubber Base

Rubber base is the best-selling product in the nail world, and for good reason: it strengthens the nail, levels it and keeps gel polish on for 3–4 weeks. But not every rubber base is the same, and not everyone uses it correctly. Here is what rubber base is, how it differs from a regular base, how to apply it step by step and how to choose the right one.

What is rubber base?

Rubber base is a gel polish base with a thick, flexible, rubber-like texture. Unlike a thin liquid base, it is applied in a thicker layer, self-levels and forms a flexible "shell" on the nail. Flexibility matters: natural nails bend all the time and a rigid coating cracks. Rubber base bends with the nail, so the polish does not lift.

Who is rubber base for?

  • Thin, soft nails – it strengthens and prevents breakage.
  • Uneven nails – ridges disappear after a leveling layer.
  • Frequent lifting – flexibility prevents chips at the tip.
  • Natural manicure – a nude camouflage base looks great on its own.

For strong healthy nails a classic base is enough – see how to choose a base for gel polish.

How to apply rubber base – step by step

  1. Prep: cuticles, shape, light buffing.
  2. Dehydrator and primer: remove moisture and oil.
  3. Thin first coat: work it into the nail, cap the edge, cure 60 s in LED.
  4. Leveling coat: place a bead in the center and guide it to the sides without touching skin. Flip the hand for a few seconds to form the apex.
  5. Cure: 60–90 s in LED (120 s in UV).
  6. Color and top: two thin coats of gel polish and a top coat.

Clear or camouflage?

A clear base works under any color. A camouflage base comes in nude, pink and milky shades: it hides spots, saves a color coat and is the perfect base for a French manicure.

5 common mistakes

  • A leveling coat that is too thick – it floods the cuticle and lifts.
  • A bead too close to the cuticle – leave about a millimeter.
  • Curing too briefly – a thick base needs more time.
  • A bottle left in the sun – the base thickens.
  • Skipping the dehydrator.

Kodi or Komilfo – which rubber base?

Both are our best sellers. Kodi Rubber Base – thick, elastic and very stable. Komilfo Rubber Base – HEMA/TPO free, good for sensitive skin, also sold in 30, 50 and 100 ml jars for salons. See Kodi bases and Komilfo bases.

Rubber base for strengthening and repair

Rubber base can reinforce a cracked nail and build a short tip. For serious repairs use builder gel or acrylic gel – how to fix a broken nail. If the base burns in the lamp – how to choose a nail lamp.
