Broken nail? How to fix it with rubber base and acrylic gel

08/10/2026

Builder gel for nail repair

A broken or cracked nail is one of the most common problems — for salon clients and for anyone doing their nails at home. A small chip at the tip can turn into a deep break if it is not reinforced in time, and then cutting all the nails short seems like the only option. The good news: in most cases you can fix a broken nail quickly, without shortening, using a rubber base, acrylic gel or polygel. Here is when a repair is possible, what you need and how to do it step by step.

When you can repair — and when you can't

  • A crack at the tip or a chip on the free edge — easy to repair.
  • A lengthwise crack that does not reach the skin — can be repaired carefully, with reinforcement.
  • A deep break reaching the skin, bleeding, swelling or pain — do not apply products. Disinfect, let the nail heal and see a doctor if needed.

What you need

Find everything in base coats, acrylic gels & polygel and nail tools.

Fixing a small crack — step by step

  1. Prep: gently file the broken area so no sharp edges remain, buff off the shine and remove dust.
  2. Cleanse: dehydrator, then primer — essential for good adhesion.
  3. Base layer: a thin layer of rubber base over the whole nail, then cure.
  4. Fill the crack: place a bead of thick base over the crack, let it level and cure.
  5. Finish: file to shape, add gel polish if you like and seal with top coat.

Fixing a larger break with acrylic gel or polygel

If part of the nail has broken off, rebuild the missing part on a form: place a nail form under the edge, sculpt the missing section with acrylic gel or polygel, cure, remove the form and file. Polygel is especially easy with dual forms because it does not run. See the differences in gel polish vs acrylic gel vs polygel.

Common mistakes

  • Household glue — not designed for nails, may irritate skin and damage the nail.
  • Too much product — the repair looks bulky and breaks again in the same spot.
  • Skipping primer — without adhesion the repair lifts within days.
  • Aggressive filing — weakens the natural nail around the break.

FAQ

How long does a repair last?

A well-done repair lasts until the next fill — usually about 3 weeks.

Can I fix a nail at home without an e-file?

Yes. For a small crack, a file, rubber base, top coat and a home lamp are enough. A big break with a form is better left to a nail artist.

Base or acrylic gel for strengthening?

A rubber base is enough for a small crack. For a serious break or long nails, acrylic gel or polygel is stronger.
