French Manicure with Gel Polish – Step-by-Step

The French manicure is a classic that never goes out of style: a soft pink-nude base with a clean white tip. It suits weddings, the office and everyday life, and with gel polish it lasts 3–4 weeks without chipping. Here's how to do a gel French manicure at home or in the salon, what you need, and how to paint a straight "smile line" even as a beginner.
What you need
- French camouflage base – a milky-pink base that hides imperfections, e.g. Komilfo Color Base French 001. More shades in base coats.
- Dense white gel polish – highly pigmented and non-runny: gel polishes.
- Thin liner brush or a French brush.
- Top coat – glossy or matte: top coats.
- Dehydrator, primer and cleanser from prep liquids.
Step 1: prep
Prep as for any gel manicure: cuticles, shape, light buffing, dehydrator and primer. Shape matters most in a French – the white tip highlights any asymmetry. The most flattering shapes are oval, almond and soft square.
Step 2: camouflage base
Apply a thin coat of color base, cure, then a second coat with light leveling (apex) if needed. A camouflage base replaces two coats of color and gives a smooth, even finish. More: how to choose a base.
Step 3: the smile line
- Liner brush – a dot in the center of the tip, then a line from each side toward it. Most precise.
- Stamper – white on a soft silicone stamper, press the tip at an angle. Fast and beginner-friendly.
- Guide stickers – stick on the cured base and paint white over them.
Cure the white for 60 seconds. Fix an uneven line before curing with a clean brush dipped in cleanser.
Step 4: top coat
Cover the whole nail and cap the edge. Gloss is classic, matte is modern. A no-wipe top needs no wiping.
Modern French ideas
- Colored French – pastel, red or black tips.
- Micro French – an ultra-thin line, great for short nails.
- Reverse French – a line at the cuticle.
- Baby boomer – a soft white-to-nude gradient with a sponge.
- Glitter French – decor in nail design.
Bridal French
French is the bride's number-one choice: it suits any dress and looks great in photos. Book it 2–3 days before the wedding. Match the base to your skin tone: cool pink for fair skin, peachy pink for tanned skin, milky nude for everyone.
How long it lasts
With a quality base and top a gel French lasts 3–4 weeks. To keep the white from yellowing use a top with UV filter, wear gloves with hair dye and chemicals, and apply cuticle oil daily. After 2–3 weeks of growth it's time for a refill.
Common mistakes
- Runny white – the line spreads.
- A thick line on short nails makes them look shorter.
- Not capping the edge – the white chips.
- Clear base instead of camouflage – every flaw shows.
Short nails can be extended with acrylic gel; a broken nail can be repaired; old polish should be removed properly. All French products at FormulaProfi are original, with insured shipping to Israel, free shipping over $100 and a gift with every order.
