Gel polish, acrylic gel or polygel — what's the difference?

Beginners often confuse gel polish, rubber base, acrylic gel, polygel and builder gel. All of them cure in a UV/LED lamp and look similar in the bottle, but each has its own job. The wrong choice leads to lifting, breaks or a bulky-looking manicure. Here is a simple explanation of how these materials differ, when to use each one and how to choose what suits you and your nails.
Gel polish
A thin color coat for natural nails, applied in thin layers over a base and under a top coat. It usually lasts 2–3 weeks. Gel polish does not lengthen the nail and barely strengthens it — its job is color and design.
Best for: color manicures on natural nails. Browse shades in gel polish.
Rubber base
A flexible, thicker foundation that levels and strengthens the nail. It lets you build a light apex and slightly extend the coating. Many clients now wear a color base on its own. Details in our base coat guide.
Acrylic gel and polygel
Building materials that combine the strength of acrylic with the convenience of gel. They are thick, don't run, don't smell like classic acrylic and are easy to shape on forms or tips. They let you extend nails, repair breaks and build a precise shape. Polygel is especially handy with dual forms, e.g. Komilfo PolyGel.
Best for: extensions, strengthening weak nails and repairing a broken nail.
Builder gel
A thick self-leveling gel for building and strengthening. It works well with the bead technique, gives a strong apex and a very smooth finish. Available in clear, milky and cover shades, e.g. Komilfo Gel Premium Ivory.
Quick comparison
| Material | Purpose | Extends? | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gel polish | color | no | easy |
| Rubber base | leveling & strength | slightly | easy–medium |
| Acrylic gel / polygel | building & strength | yes | medium |
| Builder gel | building & apex | yes | medium–advanced |
How each material is removed
Regular gel polish soaks off or is filed. Rubber base, acrylic gel, polygel and builder gel barely dissolve, so they are filed — usually not completely: a thin layer stays and you do a fill. This protects the natural nail. Details in our removal guide.
How long does each coating last?
Gel polish over a rubber base usually lasts 2–3 weeks. Nails built with acrylic gel or builder gel last 3–4 weeks, after which you do a fill on the grown-out area. Wear time also depends on nail type, prep quality and the client's daily routine — frequent contact with water and cleaning products shortens it.
Beginner mistakes
- Long nails with gel polish only — too thin, they break.
- Too much building product — the nail looks heavy.
- Under-curing — thick materials need full curing time.
- Mixing incompatible products — better use base, builder and top from one brand.
- Skipping primer — building products lift quickly.
So what to choose?
- Color on natural nails? Rubber base + gel polish + top coat.
- Thin, brittle nails? Medium rubber base or acrylic gel overlay.
- Want long nails? Acrylic gel, polygel or builder gel on forms.
- Just starting? Begin with base and gel polish, move to building later.
